King Ranch
Quarter Horses
Established 1853
King Ranch is a private, family-owned corporation that combines
time-tested practices with cutting-edge technologies. The Home
Ranches in South Texas cover 825,000 acres. Over the course of 165
years, King Ranch led some of the first cattle drives, developed the
Santa Gertrudis of cattle as well as the Santa Cruz and American
Red commercial crosses, bred the finest Quarter Horses, and pro-
duced champion Thoroughbreds—all under its iconic Running W®
brand.
The King Ranch Quarter Horse breeding program evolved from
necessity. Horses are vital for handling and working cattle on the
widespread holdings of the Ranch. With the numbers of cattle and
nature of the country, the horses have to be quick, fast, smart, and
tough. They have to have heart and endurance to go all day in the
heat and the humidity.
The working horses are as important to King Ranch today as they
were when Captain Richard King established the Ranch in 1853.
Despite technological innovations in many other aspects of King
Ranch life, the horse remains essential on the Ranch with all of
the cowboys still doing their work mounted on King Ranch-bred
Quarter Horses. As the Ranch
continues to evolve its Quar-
ter Horse pedigrees to more
modern bloodlines, the Ranch
will never forget the lessons
learned of what makes the best
horses for the toughest terrain.
