Beggs Cattle
Company
Established 1876
The Beggs family’s 100-plus years in ranching and livestock
began in 1876, when George Beggs Sr. settled in what is now
Handley, Texas. He leased land in that area and began dealing
in cattle and horses. In 1893,
Beggs moved his family and
business to Fort Worth, and
opened a livestock commission
and loan business in the Stock-
yards District.
Beggs’ sons, W.D. and John
Erin “Crowbar”, were ranch-
ers operating as Beggs Broth-
ers. They ranched on leased
land at Bluff Dale, Texas, and
later moved their operation to
Wellington. The senior Beggs’
youngest son, George Jr.,
opened a real estate and insur-
ance office in Fort Worth.
In 1923, the three brothers
joined forces to operate the
E.D. Farmer Ranch in Park-
er County, located between
Weatherford and Fort Worth.
In 1926, they purchased the
Pete Scoggins Ranch in Garza
and Kent counties. In 1932, the
George Beggs Trust purchased
the Pursley and Foley Ranch-
es in Dickens, Kent, King, and
